Avvakum Press has been around since the nineties, originally as a samizdat translation project, then as a producer of happenings in the Petersburg post-underground art and literature scene, a phase that culminated with Книга вечеринок (The Party Book, 1996; 2nd ed., 2007), a chronicle of a year in the life of the painters, poets, and punks who congregated at the once-mighty Pushkinskaya 10 squat in downtown Petersburg. After that scene faded away and inspired by such “golden age” bloggers as K-Punk (aka Mark Fisher), Avvakum Press turned its attention to editing, writing, and translating Chtodelat News and the Russian Reader, focused on grassroots dissidence and alternative culture in Russia, and Living in FIN, devoted to translations of Finnish poetry and impressions of life in the world’s happiest country. This (re)new(ed) website is a grab bag of things not necessarily fit for print in those more serious, dedicated spaces, things like snippets of paywalled news articles and Substacks, quotations shorn of all context, snapshots of life in progress, and ruminations on the current conjuncture. In other words, the website Avvakum Press is a commonplace book, a diary of sorts, a woebegone scrapbook of memories, and a constellation of collages, although with time it might become something else altogether. ||||| hecksinductionhour
